Kylene was misdiagnosed with type 2 diabetes in August 2010. In May 2011, she was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes. She became an advocate in the diabetes community, focusing on the diversity and inclusion of people with diabetes in the Black, Hispanic, Asian, and Indigenous communities.
From observation of lack in representation, Kylene wanted to create items and a space that would allow women to express themselves. She is an advocate, having spoke on a variety of panels, conferences, focus groups and even curating spaces for women to come together. She is the founder of Blackdiabetic Girl, host of the Girl Chat Retreat and is one of Dope Diabetic Girls Club's co-founder. She has plans to continue to provide support throughout the community by hosting events (in person and virtual), podcasts and more.
I'm working on some exciting new things so stay on the lookout.
